Ball valve operation

Ball valves are probably the most common device in the world for blocking or partialize the flow of a liquid or fluid. Their functioning is based on the 90° rotation of a sphere called shutter, which has a cylindrical hole inside to allow the liquid to pass. Depending on the rotation of the shutter in the valve, there is a complete passage of the fluid in the pipeline, or no passage due to total closure. Specifically: when the shutter is oriented so that the hole is on the same axis as the pipeline, then there is total passage of the fluid and the valve practically becomes a section of the pipeline. When the shutter is oriented so that the hole is perpendicular to the passage, then there is a total closure and there is no passage.

Reduced bore and full bore valves

The diameter of the hole in the ball can be less than or equal to the one of the pipes entering and leaving the valve. If the diameter of the hole in the ball is smaller than that of the pipes entering and leaving the valve, then we speak of partial passage or reduced bore, as the fully open valve becomes like a section of pipe, but narrower than the pipe on which it is placed.
If, on the other hand, the diameter of the passage hole is equal to that of the pipe on which it is placed, we speak of total passage or full bore.
